Where to get your Ancestry info

By Carol Bentley

I've wavered between a keen interest in my ancestors to a 'not sure it is worth the bother', but with the interesting programmes on TV about finding ancestors - and perhaps even digging up a few skeletons - and my hubby's interest in his family maybe it is a hobby that could be interesting.

Of course if you've not done it before the starting point is usually to ask relatives, parents, grandparents. Ah - problem there, they are no longer around.

So where do you start? Well - here in the UK - the government hold what is known as a census of the population. And - according to an ancestry magazine I picked up - there is great excitement about the release of the 1911 census for England and Wales.

So I took a look - you can too at 1911 Census

The census records the names of people and where they were on the night the census was taken - which is Sunday 2 April 1911. It shows everyone listed in the household and who the head is, as well as ages, dates of birth etc.

Something that made me smile... but could be very exasperating for people searching the female line of their family - is that it is thought thousands of women are not on the census because the Suffragette movement boycotted it as a protest against the government refusing women the right to vote.

You can search the census for free and, if you find a relative, you can choose to view the record by paying for credits on the website (not outrageously expensive IMO).
